S.D. ”I am from Romania and it is sad to see how nature has been transformed into a commodity for the big corporations to destroy.”

N.d.  ”haideti locuitori ai comunei sa protestati”

N.d. ”the last undisturbed river sounds enough if you ask me… ”

J.G. ”Once this is destroyed, we cannot get it back! ”

O.C. ”Help to save this beautiful area of Romania and Europe, unique, still wild, clean, full of history and traditions! ”

C.-V.R. ”Although I have been a witness to several such constructions in different part of the Romanian Carpathians, I have not signed any petitions. In this case, I find it outrageous to know that a valley preserved by reduced human activity at the edge of the Retezat National Park, bearing an immeasurable beauty, will be forever scared. I sign this petition in complete disagreement towards the projects which involve any non-environmentally friendly human activity in this region.”

C.M. ”The river Raul Alb is protected by Natura 2000 and environmental law. Not upholding the law obviously flies in the face of creating the laws in the first place. It also sends a very seriously flawed message to developers that there are ways around the law, and at the same time weakens the faith in law of the general pubic This river is „protected.” Why then were certificates issued? Seems counterproductive. Regards and thank you for time. Happy Natura 2000 day on May 21. ”

V.E.T. ”I don’t want lo loose what is really natural and genuine in my homeland. Not enymore.”

S.F. ”o beautiful and wild are Retezat Mountains! Please keep them like this, so my kids may get to know them unaltered, as I did when I was 16 !”

N.d. ”This is life. Aren’t we all fighting for life? Why fight now against it?”

V.I. ”People, let’s try and not destroy/disturb the few remaining natural ecosystems in Romania! There are many alternative energy resources available, more sustainable-friendly.”

J.C. ”Please allow this beautiful river to flow and add to the beauty of the area.”

H.A. ”Please save this river and do not let corrupt people destroy the last remaining river Raul Alb and the valley. Ceausescu destroyed so much of Romania for the love of money. Please do not continue his reign of destruction of all that is truly beautiful. Tourism in Romania will increase to see such beauty in Europe. This way everyone can benefit, instead of destruction of this natural treasure. I hope and pray that this situation will be dealt with honour.”

S.Y. ”What a treasure for future generations you have in that last undistrubed river! Please don’t throw it away!”

D.-J.P.G. ”Please undo and investigate these ”administrative mistakes”, put construction on hold and protect this beautiful area and it’s wildlife.”

B.W. ”Please protect the last undisturbed river in Romanian Carpathians. This beautiful landscape has been untouched by human greed so far and it should be kept that way.”

L.M. ”Do not destroy the beauty of nature ! You can’t be against so many population who are signing here … ”

L.H. ”I am shocked to learn that there is only one river in the Romanian Carpathians that remains undisturbed. For the love of Nature and everything sacred on our planet, please protect it from human meddling!”

U.J.  ”for a better world…..take responsability, don’t run away from it…the earth doesn’tbelong to us only”

F.R. ”Please spare this river from destruction. There are many new technologies appearing which can provide electrical power to individual households without the need for such destruction. Perhaps your government can demand their release by the US led corporations who have suppressed them.”

N.d. ” Hydro power will be replaced one day, but a river and it’s creatures once lost, are irreplaceable. Don’t destroy your streams to provide luxuries for people already living in comfort. Keep people in the countryside to look after its reslources instead of attracting them to cities that will become feedlots for humans, using imported resources and further impoverishing their rural areas.”

R.G. ”The world is watching.”

M.G. ”We have to leave some rivers undisturbed!”

F.S. ”Let the rivers run free”

M.M. ”Retezat Mountains are pure gold for Romanian tourism! Do not destroy what is pure and unique. ”

V.A. ” Making this area a nature reserve is more appropriate.”

D.A.  ”It is duty on us all to preserve Nature, but that duty gets more sacred as Officers of Government: Madam, it’s on you and highest Leader in Government to save this last undisturbed River!”

L.A. ”This river has been inspiration for Artists & musicians over the centuries, it’s pristine quality is unique, please don’t let bribes, corruption, criminal activity, greed, get in the way of preserving this river for the whole PLANET Earth. I am in Australia, but I can appreciate this beautiful countryside. SAVE IT PLEASE”

H.C. ”Fresh water will soon be scarce. Please save a dying environment. Save this river Raul Alb and the wondrous nature surrounding it.”

A.I. ”I went to the Retezat national park last year. Spectacular indeed. There is already a dam there. How many more dams do the corporations want? Portile de Fier, the hydropower plant on the Danube, built by the government in the 80’s, is already in foreign corporate hands, along with the other hydropower generating plants. The locals now buy their power, at higher prices, from a foreign corporation on their own land. I think, by now, all the hydropower generated in Romania is in the hands of corporations, not the state. The politicians are just actors on behalf of these corporations. It would be a shame to further damage such a beautiful part of the world, in order to have more electricity to sell for some corporations. Flood the anthropological record, the fossils, the human historical record of this part of the world, etc. Politicians, grow a spine and protect this part of the world. No more bogus restitutions to families who had the land from exploitative feudal times, no more industrial development, just let nature be nature. Western Europe does not have the wilderness Romania has, which does not seem to be appreciated enough by its politicians.”

E.H. ” Development of natural areas to benefit consumption by way of the destruction of the natural environment is rarely as productive as the use of the conservation area for tourism, filtering and replenishment of the air, protection and nurturing of plant and animal life, and production of water based food stuffs. Please do not give up this area of pristine beauty .”

M.S. ”We are fast losing our environments worldwide and what will we have left, concrete and desert. Please do not allow this beautiful habitat to go the same way.”

  1. K. ”I hope it attains United Nations world heritage status.”

  1. A. ”We don’t need any more hydro plants, we need to preserve the bit of nature we still have left for our children to inherit.”

L.M. ”Please do all you can to keep this beautiful river pristine – for the sake of the animal life, and for the natural beauty of the environment there. Please seriously consider another source of power.”

  1. B. ”one small river that holds so much life and history….it is essential to protect areas, no matter where, for the future of the earth”
  2. E. ”Why is this important ? To find out, just visit Uzbekistan and see what happens when rivers are messed up.”

K.P. ”There is more value in leaving some things untouched, than using up every bit of land. Please keep this river untouched for future generations to see.”

J.T. ”Dear Minister Gavrilescu: The river Raul Alb in the Carpathians needs your commitment for its future preservation and protection. Can we count on your help?”

J.S. ”You are so lucky to have a pristine river, please look after it and protect it. Thank you.”

T.L. ”River is the blood vein of the earth, it needs to be protected at all cost…”

T.H. ”Once destroyed the rivers can never return to its natural state, look for alternatives to destruction and find more exciting and caring ways to protect the environment and provide power.”

S.M. ”Please save this river. Worldwide we have lost so many beautiful places, rich in wildlife, to the modern world. We cannot go on destroying these precious environments. Please don’t let it happen this time.”

I.G. ”Can you not see what a terrible devastation will be caused if you allow this destruction to happen. Once you have permitted this there is no way the harm can be undone. Too much suffering has been caused by greedy ruthless industrial activity. Don’t let it happen to this beautiful place.”

K.H. ”I hope that this river is saved as a national heritage and not exploited. ”

A.Z. ”Nature is for every country and for all the world the biggest value, once destroyed, often with no possibility to turn back to the initial status. Please consider it and protect it for your countryand future generations.”

J.M. ”This river is important for the whole Europe, not solely for Romania. The valley of this small river holds a huge natural heritage.”

J.&S. S. ”SIR, WE VISIT BEAUTIFUL ROMANIA FOR 3 WEEKS EVERY SUMMER. FOR US, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT „WILD ROMANIA” REMAINS THIS WAY. FOR THE DIGNITY OF YOUR NATION, PLEASE STOP ALL PLANS TO DISTURB THE RAUL ALB RIVER. PLEASE DO MORE TO PROTECT THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF ROMANIA. WE CARE! THANK YOU KINDLY.”

  1. L. ”You would think that cases such as this would be a thing of the past. Everything left is special and needs to be protected so that it can flourish once again.”

T.H. ”Please do the responsible and respectable thing and protect this remaining wild corner of Europe. Stop this irreversible act of destruction before it is too late! Serve the wishes of the people and the environment, and NOT big business!”

P.S.  ”We have few pristine areas in Europe Do not spoil another I visited the Carpathians years ago So breath-taking and magical Please leave this beautiful river as nature intended”

S.D. ”Please don’t make the mistake that so many other countries have made. We have so few wild rivers left in the world. I hope you have the courage and determination to be proud of the one you have and to protect it.”

L.G. ”The world needs help now more than any other time in history. Please save this undisturbed river for future generations or they just have a wasteland and your grand-children may also face extinction like so many animals are in a world of progress. The profits are short term, Please have more intelligence and vision in the way you treat nature.”

J.M. ”you must put landscape above money – when it’s gone it’s gone … ”

A.F. ”Has a full biodiversity audit been done? Have alternatives been considered? If it is within a Natura 2000 site then that should take precedence over the need for hydro power in any case.”

D.B. ”There are better ways to seek the energy you need in the modern world”

J.W. ”Save this River why destroy the only area where protected species can still survive. No to any more Hydropower.”

  1. R. ”save this amazing river!”
  2. M. ”Stop this appalling nonsense now!”
  3. M. ”As a Romanian citizen I can’t just stand aside and watch the few green areas we have left getting destroyed for profit. We, the citizens, have the right to oppose such acts that are against the country’s welfare!”

A.B. ”Undisturbed rivers can teach us so much about how nature works when left uncompromised. Please preserve this part of your heritage for future generations.Thank you.”

A.H. ”Please do not spoil this beautiful river as has happened with all the other rivers once they are used for hydropower!”

L.B. ”The mountains and rivers of the Romanian Carpathians are treasures to be preserved and protected as important parts of the natural heritage of Romania.”

C.C. ”Please save the last U disturbed river in the Romanian Carpathians. It is home to many species of fish, birds and animals. There has been enough environmental damage to other rivers by so called progress.”

N.W. ”Preservation of undisturbed natural landscape has a value of its own that would seem to outweigh advantages of power development”

N.d. ”Please consider very carefully Minister for Environment, that the long-term cost is not positive if illegal constructions are allowed to proceed, because of this last undisturbed and VERY IMPORTANT beautiful River in Romania’s Carpathians.”

K.P. ”Do the right and noble thing!”

N.G. ”please think of this wonderful heritage which belongs not just to Romania but to all of us worldwide! Issuing green certificates is a contradiction of all that a national park stands for.”

D.S. ”Please leave the Raul Alb River in its natural state, free from industrial use and pollution. As human beings, we shouldn’t have the right to destroy our natural heritage.”

M.M. ”energy can be generated from wind and sun. Dams for hydro schemes cause far too much damage and loss of habitat and should not be built at this critical time for the health of our globe.”

L.B. ”I visited this area decades ago. It was beautiful. Please act now to keep it that way: save the river and stop illegal construction.”

D.G. ”We will be travelling in Romania in May and plan to go visit this valley. These areas are disappearing forever!”

T.M. ”Please preserve this river, which is one of the last remaining truly wild places in Europe. It is our heritage and cannot be squandered on an industrial development, even if it is a renewable energy initiative.”

A.M. ”Please save this river – it should be part of World Heritage. There won’t be any others.”

L.R. ”If this river bed came from mountains, it will be filled with nutrients important for wildlife and humans alike. Do not pollute this river or disturb it’s flow as you will destroy the ecology of the river.”

I.R. Natura trebuie pastrata in starea ei nealterata, fireasca, frumoasa.”

  1. R. ”Please leave this one last river as natural…future generations will NEVER know how beautiful the world was when it has been destroyed forever.”

S.C. ”Hydro plants destroy ecosystems as we have learned in Canada. Keep yours and look for alternative energy sources, and more energy efficient homes and office buildings.”

P.R. ”Minister Gavrilescu, as environment minister I ask you to consider both your country ecosystem and the state of the world and stop the construction that will destroy the river Raul Alb. We must protect every natural species of plant and animal on our planet so we can maintain a viable biodiversity for the future human populations. Do not be swayed by profit motivated companies who claim there are ‘econonomic’ benefits from this development. There is NO benefit, of any sort, from destroying our planet earth.”

G.B. ”Seriously….In my lifetime, I have witnessed the deliberate and the ignorant destruction of the majority of the things around the globe that have a existence with a purpose. When younger I was told that if we pushed past certain markers with pollution and species elimination. Our earth would deteriorate so rapidly in the following 25yrs life as we know or expect would not be retrievable within a scope of centuries… human population would be decimated, less than half of the worlds population would survive the constant onslaught of weather pattern so destructive it would level the biggest of cities in less than an hour. Last week we saw the giant vortex moving over the Pacific Islands, with wind speeds that were never recorded before. Islands were reduced to baron soil, the small numbers of locals will never see their island again. The South Pacific, my home ( Sydney ) shook with fear where would this monster go….from sattelite pics it was totally a fiction like monster created on a computer. We wish it was. Luckily things went right for my very populated city, this time. Surely world leaders can see what we can see, why are they continuing to allow the systematic destruction of beautiful necessary parts of their countries ecological balance. Bribes from large minerals companies, fears of being left behind economically and many other reasons. Though in their text you will never see concern for the very fragile river ecology that has been there for centuries. We must keep rivers like this pristine…. we need good clean drinking water. Already large dams are reporting their water polluted simply by air borne fine particals of pollutants settling on the water surface. We are destroying the ecological balances all around the world. This river and with the leadership of the Romanian Govt, they can work to restore vital areas throughout their country, perhaps rebuilding entire wetlands and encouraging the return of species that had long left. Please, this river has a very very high price on its head, from nature. We have to work together now as a global co-op of nations … No not NATO but a body that works to restore, not destroy. Thank you”

P.O. ”These types of areas are extremely valuable for your country and should be greatly protected. Undistrubed forests and rivers are the life blood of your and our environment.”

J.B. ”Have just visited your beautiful country; like my Tasmania it was nearly wrecked when the last wild river was to be dammed for hydro power. Fortunately, it was stopped after popular protest and now all are so thankful that it was.”

R.S.R. ”BASTA DE ASESINATOS,,MALTRATOS,,TORTURAS,,BASTA YA,,LEYES DURAS Y CASTIGOS DUROS,,MINIMO 65 AÑOS DE CARCEL A ESOS BASTARDOS,,ASI LES IRA EN ESTA VIDA,,POR UNA VOZ POR UNA VIDA DIGNA,,EH DICHO AMEN”

K.F. ”WE HAVE TO PROTECT THIS RIVER IT LOOKS SO PRISTINE”

M.M. ”I think every country deserves to have at least one pristine, undisturbed river. Romania, save your Raul Alb.”

G.R. ”You are so fortunate to still have such a beautiful environment. Please do not ruin it.”

J.W. ”Come on Romania: you’re part of EUROPE now, not the old Soviet bloc”

N.d. ”Water is human’s most precious resource. Without it we cannot survive. Protect your rivers. Keep them clean and when you have a chance to protect one from source to end, realize what a rare opportunity you have and do not let anything keep you from protecting it. Stop the two hydropower plants on the Raul Alb. Do it for yourselves. Do it for all future generations. Do it now.”

B.L. ”There is global support for natural reserves, and we’re watching to see if Romania also understands and supports the value of a diverse ecosystem over the short term profits for a very few that „develop” this wild watershed.”

D.R. ”Really Romania Really Romania! Don’t let your political greed destroy your environmental future. Wake up!”

G.R. ”When we of the the west think of Romania, images of your astonish mountain vistas are the predominant icon… With so much of the world being put under roads, dams, and infrastructure, there is so few places left for Nature to do her work. The future of Romania could benefit enormously from the tourism possibilities associated with Wildeness. Please compare New Zealand and Tasmania with Romania’s potential here.”

G.B. ”Having been to Romania I know how lovely these parts of the country are. Let us hope this virgin territory can be saved.”

N.P. ”My wife and I have enjoyed the greatest trip of our lives when we visited Romania. We enjoyed the people, the scenery, and the culture in which all were tied closely to an unchanged and undisturbed history. When my wife retires we intend if welcomed to spend significant dollars and time in Romania. The point I would like to make is that your undisturbed environment and your preserved history and culture is a valuable economy and can bring benefits to Romania.”

S.S.-M. ”Aren’t the dams you’ve got enough? Don’t destroy a pristine river just because you can! What natural beauty will you have left then? That region is known for being breathtakingly beautiful, not to mention rich in history. And that deserves to be preserved!”

P.V. ”Damming rivers to generate power is so third world …last generation. Once these things are put in place, they do so much damage that can’t be undone.”

M.V. ” „V-am lasat saraci si prosti, va regasesc saraci si prosti” Brancusi”

L.P. ”I am Canadian, but for for some reason I am in love with Romania! I have never been there (yet) but am saving money and vacation time to make my dream a reality. I want to see the raw, natural beauty of Romania, the forests and the trees, the wild animals and the mountains. Nothing is as sacred as these things that we cannot get back once we have destroyed them. Don’t destroy your beautiful country – you can never take that back.”

A.L. ”Dear Minister – if you truly care about your country then you will prevent turning its unique biological heritage into economic wasteland!”

M.H. ”It should never come down to the last of anything, before we take notice. However, not protecting the last undisturbed river in the Romanian Carpathians would be a crime against humanity.”

N.Y. ”Unfortunately, I can’t visit your beautiful country right now, but I hope you will keep the last remaining river in the Carpathians undisturbed. Don’t repeat the big mistakes made in North America in destroying rivers for hydro projects. Once a river is destroyed, it will never come back.Leave it for your future generations to enjoy.”

T.A.  ”It’s really sad what the romanian government is doing to our country! Let’s try to stop them before it’s too late!”

P.B. ”I spent 10 years working as a Team Leader in Romania (MUDP II, Phare 2000 and Phare 2006) and I visited a few times the Retezat mountains. It is an amazing beauty and you should preserve it without any doubt.”

S.S. ”Please do not destroy this habitat. The planet survival depends on preserving important rivers. This river is important for the whole Europe, not solely for Romania.”

M.W. ”The natural health of a River is essential for the sustainability of watershed ecosystems and all the wildlife that depends on its water for life.”

N.M. ”Administrative mistakes, yeah, right! It’s been their plan all along and to H with destruction. Think past the lining of your pockets and do the right thing, stop the hydropower plants and respect environmental law for a change.”

M.C. ”To Gabriela Gavrilescu, All around the world, people would like to know that the natural environment of this catchment is safe, particularly with its otters and other animals running free is safe. Not another hydro project please. The world is watching. MAC-Australia”

P.A. ”Please keep this treasure.. a living museum, alive. ”

S.B. ”I will be visiting Romania this year. Please protect your beautiful natural heritage!”

F.B. ”Why not re-institute the national park instead of destroying the last remaining natural terrain?”

K.H. ”power is not as environmentally sound as it is made out to be. Ecosystems are precious and irreplaceable. The flooding and river blocking/diversion that results from hydroelectric projects is not a step forward.”

M.H. ”NATURE IS NOT A SELF SERVICE OUTLET FOR IGNORANT EGOTISTIC PEOPLE!!! ”

L.P. ”Protect the Raul Alb River now. It would be scandalous if this river and ecosystem were destroyed. In fact, it should be declared a National Heritage Site.”

Z.B. ”A series of „administrative mistakes” is the metaphor for bribery. Karma.”

D.H. ”When I was a child, I used to drink the water of such rivers. Everywhere in our mountains. The sweetest water in the world. Today… I did not even know such a river still exist. It is like a miracle. And, like a curse, the „masters” of the rivers are either stupid / incompetent , or corrupt.”

O.K. ”Rivers are life. They are the blood of the earth. Think.”

N.d. ”I’d rather read my book with candlelight, cook on wood fire and have cold water to wash up than to keep on destroying nature to produce energy that only profit a few greedy people.”

J.R. ”România is a beautifull country and has a lot of nature that in other parts of Europe is gone. I know the country because I come every year at least one time at my friends there. Please don’t do this to your river only for the short vieuw! Nature has a reason, it helps us to survive!”

C.T. ”Really… you really want to take a trip down this path. Remember… when some things are gone, there is no bringing them back.”

T.L. ”I am visiting Romania every year for trekking and hiking in the beautiful mountains and countryside, which I regard as the best in Europe. Please leave the Retezat river ecosystem intact!”

K.R. ”Ms Gavrilescu how can you let this ecological disaster occur? This treasure is not replacable alternative souces of power are. It’s up to you, the public are looking to you to PLEASE prevent this from happening!”

D.C. ”Please do not destroy the beautiful and pristine scenery and the last undisturbed river in the Carpathian Mountains which must bring income from the tourists who come to see this beautiful area of Romania. Thank you.”

P.S. ”If the illegal constructions on Raul Alb proceed it demonstrates clearly total irresponsibility of those with authority. Being in a Natura 2000 site and being the only remaining undisturbed river in the country should make it untouchable by ‘development’. Being a refuge for many populations of protected wildlife species should reinforce the non- touchable status of the river. Anyone with a sense of resonsiblity for the environment, which ministers are supposed to have, would put a stop to any chance of the hydropower or other development work progressing.”

P.D. ”Romania is part of the EU;their are EU directives that should be obeyed that protect. Romania should obey environmental law or leave the EU”

N.d. ”All over the world the value of undisturbed waterways is recognized and rivers are changed from canals and channels back to their former natural ways -as far as possible – to heal them and the environment – as far as possible – and ensure a healthy future for all creatures in and out of the water, including us, mankind. Only: protecting rivers from the beginning is much cheaper, and it saves so much trouble! Therefore it is wise to SAVE THE LAST (!!!) UNDISTURBED RIVER in the Romanian Carpathians. ”

J.S. ”As a country, you should be ashamed that you are considering losing such a beautiful area to construction. Wake up. Preserve your wildlife for future generations”

C.B. ”What a beautifull river! I hope we can save it. In Portugal we can’t save the last undisturbed river, Sabor… ”

J.H. ”If the minister for environment, waters and forests has any knowledge of conservation and the vital importance of protecting the last bastions of natural wilderness and pristine river systems in Romania from the threat of any destruction by construction, he would be doing his job and fulfilling his obligations. There should be no question that this river and all the ecosystems that rely on it will be protected in perpetuity, not only for the beauty of this Romanian natural heritage , but for the good of the planet, which desperately needs every healthy forest, river and wilderness area that remains untouched, if it is to survive. Humans continue to destroy the natural environment with greed and ignorance of the irreversible devastation caused at their peril.”

S.G. ”Rivers are today the true treasures of any country in the world. Clean water and a pristine nature are the assets of the 21st century. Hydropower projects are outdated and have shown to increase greenhouse gases. Real progress means to go for sun and wind energy and other renewables. Please do the right thing and protect the Raul Alb!”

L.H. ”Attorney think of your children and how they will come to hate those who have stolen their future by their blindness in not protecting nature ACT NOW TO SAVE THE RIVER !”

M.P. ”Knowing the beautiful Retezat Mountains it´s unbelievible to understand what´s going on there. It´s absolutly necessary to leave the Raul Alb untouched .This area is worth to be protected.”

N.d. ”Vandalizing such a pristine area, is indeed a crime against nature.”

C.M.The Earth is fast running out of beautiful untouched areas like the Raul Alb river. Save your river like we saved our Franklin river in Tasmania.”

K.M. ”It would be great if there were some places left untouched by people just wanting to get more money! This is a ridiculous scheme and it would be much better to protect the species in the area than have hydropower plants!!”
